A Chinese/English bilingual audiobook about military cultural heritage sites in the Taiwan Strait

Years ago, Pete’s grandfather served in the military in Matsu, a group of small islands located between Taiwan and China.

        This engaging picture book takes young readers back in time, as Grandfather tells Pete exciting stories about how the troops constructed countless tunnels, air-raid shelters, underground harbors, and other fortifications along the rugged coastlines of the Matsu Islands.

These extraordinary works of craftsmanship are a testimony to the Matsu Islands’ historic role as a “front line” of defense for Taiwan on the northern tip of the Taiwan Strait. Now gradually open to tourists for recreational use, military structures built during the Cold War form an important part of Matsu’s cultural heritage.

        Stories from the Matsu Islands will undoubtedly resonate with many people from across the world whose lives were deeply affected by the Cold War. They may echo similar experiences found along important political fault lines, including the Berlin Wall between East and West Germany, as well as the DMZ between the two Koreas.

作者簡介

劉碧雲

土生土長的大海兒女，終日盡情在好山好水中閒情度日。民國七十年國中畢業後，受惠於離島的保送制度，有幸赴台北就讀市立師專（現台北市立大學）；完成學業後重回母校──東引國民中小學服務。二十餘年中歷任教師、組長、主任等教職經歷。九十五年考取連江縣國小校長，並先後服務南竿仁愛國小、北竿 里國小及莒光東莒國小至今。

熱愛並認同地方文化，回鄉服務至今仍不忘情的耕耘在地文學，故常在馬祖日報上發表校園教學與地方風情等生活點滴隨筆。九十六年曾獲得講義雜誌社舉辦：「搶救國語文」創意教學優等獎殊榮、101年榮獲教育部師鐸獎的肯定。

About the Author

Pi-yun Liu

Born and raised by the sea, Liu grew up spending her idyllic days surrounded by beautiful mountains and waters. After graduating from middle school in 1981, as a beneficiary of the offshore islands guaranteed admissions program, she attended Taipei Teacher’s College (now University of Taipei). Upon completing her studies, she returned to teach at her alma mater – Dongyin Middle School. Liu has over 30 years of experience as a teacher, section chief and director in the education sector. In 2006 she qualified for elementary school principal, and has since served as principal of Ren Ai Elementary School in Nangan Township, Banli Elementary School in Beigan Township, and Dongju Elementary School in Juguang Township.

Liu passionately identifies with Matsu’s local culture, which has led to her contributions to the local literary scene after returning to serve her home[1]town – with many published essays in the Matsu Daily News on teaching experiences and local customs. In 2007, she received an Award of Excellence on creative teaching from the Better Life Monthly and in 2012, she received an Award of Excellent Teacher from Ministry of Education.

李問

首任民主進步黨連江縣黨部主委。曾擔任綜合性英文報紙《台北時報》新聞記者，亦曾任民進黨發言人。李問透過著作與公開座談活動，關注外交政策、區域安全及社會文化議題。先後任職於國安會、民進黨國際事務部、民進黨中國事務部、遠景基金會等智庫研究單位。

About the Translator

Wen Lii

Director of the Democratic Progressive Party’s newly-launched Lienchiang County Chapter, located on the Matsu Islands, Lii was previously a journalist at the English-language Taipei Times, as well as a former spokesperson for the DPP. 

Lii is a writer and public speaker on topics ranging from foreign policy, regional security and socio-cultural issues. He has also worked as a researcher at the National Security Council, the DPP Department of International Affairs, DPP Department of China Affairs, and the Prospect Foundation.
