《sonnet 80》詩人曾引以為傲的寫作技藝，如今棋逢敵手，如海上的戰船間的彼此競技。其他文人對少年的讚美，讓詩人不禁自慚形穢了起來。詩人透過描述這場可能戰敗的競賽，傳達對愛情的感受。戰敗即粉身碎骨，頓失一切，暴烈也壯烈。

《sonnet 81》詩人在這首詩裡，透過兩人死後的描述進行對比，襯托出少年的生命俱備更高貴的品格。紀錄少年的詩，會被世人傳頌；少年的名字是永恆的，不會被世人所遺忘。
