《sonnet 140》詩人遭受殘忍對待，隱忍已久，詩人也可能被逼到絕望邊緣，而惡言相向，予以反擊；愛情裡的針鋒相對，彷彿病患死期將近，只想從醫生口中聽到對自己有利的消息。若愛人已不再存在情感，詩人依然期望對方坦承面對。

《sonnet 141》儘管眼之所見，滿是愛人的缺陷，但心卻沉溺於這份情感當中，詩人的身心都奉獻給愛人，服侍愛人，身心彼此抗辯，儘管身上的五感皆感受不到愉悅，卻仍無法自拔，因為愛之深，而嘗到愛情伴隨而來的痛苦。
